It too is a home front novel, though not comic at all (and really a psychological thriller rather than a mystery). Lucia, the protagonist, must manage her household (in the NY suburbs) without her husband; a shopping list and the ration points needed for cheese offer a clue. I was astonished to find that they had blackout and air raid practices. There were shortages, but not of everything. You can't beat something written at the time for detail...
