I hope you will comment more often.

About Bercow's Jewishness: most certainly he should not be elected to any position for that reason but it is useful to mark stages in the development of freedom and equality of opportunity. From that point of view I think it matters. The Speakership is rather an odd position in that previous record does not necessarily qualify you for it. Bercow's political meanderings are not particularly attractive but there is no reason why that should mean he will not be a good Speaker.

Incidentally, I am glad to see that ConHome notes his support for those oppressed politically in other countries. There the Speaker's unique position can give him a great deal of clout.

http://conservativehome.blogs.com/thetorydiary/2009/06/we-must-now-hope-that-john-bercow-can-succeed.htmlHelennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4057487038565855826.post-11047517033716408902009-06-23T15:48:09.000+01:002009-06-23T15:48:09.000+01:00I'd like to comment more often here, Helen, bu...I'd like to comment more often here, Helen, but time constraints apply and you inevitably make similar points to the ones I'd mention regardless.

As far as John Bercow's Jewishness is concerned, I think it's irrelevant and couldn't understand why Wiki alluded to his father at all. Surely, this is the crux of the problem in today's society: rather than examining a politician's record and their effectiveness, the public and opinion formers seem more concerned with the member's ethnicity or religious persuasion. Needless to say, I was glad that the hypocritical Parmjit Dhanda didn't succeed given his hypocrisy over MPs' superficial (skin colour/religious persuasion) representation of their constituencies.Shlomonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4057487038565855826.post-62812753320486369582009-06-23T14:10:02.000+01:002009-06-23T14:10:02.000+01:00Thanks, it is quite helpful. On the whole I would have more faith (in the other sense) in people's editing of the Wiki entry if they could spell. That first comment is atrocious.Helennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4057487038565855826.post-49777855423033622222009-06-23T14:02:05.000+01:002009-06-23T14:02:05.000+01:00You can find out why a wikipedia article was modif...You can find out why a wikipedia article was modified. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:John_Bercow
... check under "Jewish Taxi Driver"
I hope that helps.infonoreply@blogger.com
