This is very sad

Christopher Hitchens, one of the world's best journalists and authors, a unique voice who listened to no-one and went along only with his own ideas, has died. There will be many obituaries, tributes and attacks (just as he would have liked since nobody relished a good fight more than Hitchens). Here is the one in Vanity Fair, his long-time home.

  1. The Arts and Letters Daily website has links to many obituaries.

  2. Thank you. For the moment I have maxed out on Hitchens obituaries but I do intend to read the piece by his brother.

  3. Was thinking of reading Hitchens on Jefferson or Orwell after listening to taped interviews as these volumes were published ... can you recommend either of them?

  4. I know more about his writings on Orwell but must try him on Jefferson, as well. So, go for either. And if you disagree, feel free to scream abuse at the author. ;) I can safely say, he would have liked it.

  5. Did you know Mr Hitchens personally? Reading some of the unflattering appraisals that now accompany the euphonious eulogies, it is hard not to imagine that these authors have taken courage to criticise now that he can no longer train his pen on them in reply.

  6. Strange that a right wing libertarian would be saddened over the death of such a hateful left-wing bigot as Hitchens. As a public intellectual he worked hard to justify an unprovoked war in which many thousands of people were killed. He is therefore the enabler of a war crime and thus a war criminal. Why is the death of a war criminal something that would sadden a libertarian?
